Virtual High-Resolution Stereo Microscope for Ophthalmic Surgery Simulator

Haag-Streit Diagnostics and VRmagic develop digital microscope head

Mannheim/Bern. The Swiss company Haag-Streit, a leading manufacturer of diagnostic equipment for ophthalmology, and the German simulator manufacturer VRmagic have developed a digital microscope head for the Eyesi® Surgical ophthalmic surgery simulator. The virtual reality simulator therefore now offers trainee ophthalmic surgeons an even more realistic training environment: the digital binocular provides the viewer with a large three-dimensional field of view with a detail-precise resolution of 1080×1080 pixels per eye.

The beam path of a microscope is simulated and visualized in real time with depth of field and all optical effects. Instead of the image plane in a real microscope, the stereoscopic simulation images are shown on two microdisplays in the new digital microscope head. The optical system provides a realistic exit pupil, so that the eye distance has to be adjusted to the user’s own pupil size in order to obtain a complete, wide 3D field of vision, just like with a real surgical microscope. The refraction can also be corrected individually by means of a diopter scale on the eyepieces.

The mechanical and optical systems of the digital microscope head are from Haag-Streit. VRmagic developed the electronics of the digital stereo tube and the software for controlling the OLED microdisplays.
