Research on Robotic Assistance in Eye Surgery Uses Virtual Reality

VRmagic adapts surgery simulator for study on the Preceyes robotic assistance system

A virtual reality simulator from VRmagic is going to be used in a study at Rigshospitalet – Glostrup in Copenhagen, Denmark, to investigate the benefits of a robotic assistance system for ocular surgery developed by the Dutch company Preceyes B.V.. Aim of the study is research on the benefits of robotic assistance for training, learning curves and performance of eye surgeons in vitreoretinal surgery procedures.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Rigshospitalet has a research program focused on effective training of eye surgeons and has established virtual-reality modalities to evaluate performance and skill levels. The VR simulators allow for comprehensive study designs without putting a patient at risk at any time.

For the purpose of the current study, Preceyes requested VRmagic to integrate their robotic assistance system into the Eyesi® Surgical simulator. The hardware integration was achieved within two months of development time. Moreover, VRmagic extended the Eyesi software to simulate the precise measurement of the distance between the instrument and the retina of the patient´s eye as provided for by the robotic assistance system in real surgery. Preceyes uses an OCT-based sensor to support the surgeon in maintaining a fixed distance to the retina.

Preceyes’ high-precision technology aims to improve both performance and patient safety in ocular surgery, with vitreoretinal surgery as the initial target market. The technology promises to improve the delivery of existing procedures and enables the development of new treatments such as high-precision drug delivery. The system has been successfully used for the first robot-assisted eye surgery at University Hospital Oxford in 2016 and is currently under development for application in various vitreoretinal procedures.
