New lens simulation model for phaco training

Haag-Streit Simulation is introducing an entirely new simulation model of the lens for phacoemulsification training. The simulation of the ocular tissue behavior has been optimized for the training of sculpting, cracking, chopping, emulsifying, and aspirating the lens. The Eyesi phaco divide-and-conquer and chopping training modules are now based on the same physics-based model, which adds to a highly immersive training environment. Trainees can particularly experience the improved interaction of instruments with ocular structures during the emulsification and chopping steps.

During sculpting in the divide-and-conquer training modules, the high resolution of the lens model results in a more tight-fitting construction of the trench if instrument motion and ultrasonic energy settings are correct. Also, the behavior of lens material during aspiration is close-to-life. Collisions between lens pieces and other intraocular structures add to the realistic simulation of the restricted space in phaco surgery.

Video: Dr. Ivo Ferreira Rios, M.D. has reviewed the new training modules for phaco divide-and-conquer and phaco chop on the Eyesi Surgical simulator.

Reworked simulation model for hydro dissection

The simulation model for hydro dissection has been reworked for an overall better visualization of intraocular structures and more lifelike responsiveness of tissue. Instrument interaction now results in more feedback of the harder endo nucleus and an initial resistance against rotation of the lens. The rotation can be facilitated by further injections. There is more lens deformation upon instrument manipulation and the visualization of structures upon the cleavage are more distinct.

Update on retinal detachment methods

The retinal detachment training module now offers more procedural flexibility. Trainees can reattach the retina without using perfluorocarbon (PFC) liquid before lasering the retinal tear. Using PFC is still possible, but a PFC level just below the retinal tears is sufficient. In addition, Haag-Streit Simulation has introduced a new instrument, a diathermy probe to mark retinal holes. Further, in the first training level, enhanced visual aids make it easier to discern reattached and detached retina areas.

New expert videos on cataract surgery training

The online cataract courses feature new expert videos. This new series of video interviews will surely be of high value for trainees and is an excellent addition to the existing content. We want to thank Dr. Peter Wilson, Department of Ophthalmology at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, Scotland, for sharing insights, tips, and tricks for residents.

‘Vitreoretinal Basics’ online course

VRmNet features a new vitreoretinal online course, which introduces the core concepts and indications of posterior segment surgery. Further, trainees learn about patient preparation, instruments, and vitreoretinal optics. They also receive hands-on tips on mastering their first practical simulator tasks.
