Complication Training for Experienced Surgeons

In a routine procedure like cataract surgery, serious complications rarely occur. When they do happen, it is crucial to act quickly to avoid serious consequences. Acquiring the necessary skills is essential, but training opportunities are limited.

The new Eyesi Surgical software fills this gap by offering new training scenarios for eye surgery under difficult circumstances. Dr. Clemens Wagner, Head of R&D at VRmagic, introduces the new training features for experienced surgeons.

Practice Anterior Vitrectomy

When vitreous prolapses into the capsule bag after a posterior capsule break, this can be extremely distressing for cataract surgeons who normally operate in the anterior segment only. The new anterior vitrectomy training module on the Eyesi Surgical simulator now enables surgeons to practice all steps required to remove the vitreous from the anterior segment: staining the vitreous with triamcinolone, setting the correct OR machine parameters, and using the vitrector without causing traction on the retina. There are seven different training scenarios, the easiest one with only a small capsule break and the most demanding one with a large capsular rupture and vitreous sticking to the incision and iris.

Insert an Iris Expansion Ring

In patients with a small pupil or with floppy iris syndrome (IFIS), the surgeon does not have enough space to access the lens capsule. This makes it difficult or even impossible to perform cataract surgery. In these cases, the pupil can be expanded mechanically using an iris expansion ring which is inserted and removed using a special injector. What seems to be an easy task can be time-consuming and nerve-wracking if it has never been done before. The new iris expansion ring training module offers the unique opportunity to practice this procedure before having to deal with it for the first time in the OR.

Review Your Performance with Time Lapse

The new Time Lapse menu allows users to access quick replay videos and scoring summaries of their recently completed tasks. Each time lapse video shows a fast overview and makes short pauses at key scoring events, for example critical mistakes. The scoring events are displayed as red dots in a time line, as on-screen text messages, and partly as highlighted areas in the time lapse video. The time lapse feature is an excellent way for surgeons to review their performance and improve certain skills systematically.
