Vitreoretinal Surgery Training

For training of posterior segment surgery, the Eyesi® Surgical platform can be equipped with a vitreoretinal eye interface and instrument set. In order to further enhance the realistic surgical simulation environment, a BIOM/SDI hardware mimic and microscope foot switch can be integrated, which is operated just like a real BIOM in the operating room. The complex interactions of auxiliary optics are accurately reproduced.

Posterior Segment Training Modules

Vitreoretinal training modules available for Eyesi® Surgical include posterior hyaloid detachment, peripheral vitrectomies, internal limiting membrane peeling (ILM) or the removal of epiretinal membranes, or the treatment of retinal detachments with oil or gas endotamponades. A realistic posterior segment surgical simulation environment is provided through the use of scleral indentation, a vitrectomy machine, variable illumination intensity of the light pipe and an endolaser. The number of Eyesi® training modules is being constantly extended. Eyesi® Surgical units can be upgraded as new modules become available.

Vitrectomy Machine and Instruments

During virtual surgery, instruments such as light probe, cannula, endolaser, and vitrector are available. Just as in real surgery, discreet instrument movements are required to avoid undue wound stress or retinal injuries. Eyesi Surgical provides an OR machine interface and a two-axis instrument foot pedal to control fluidics. Trainees must select appropriate OR machine parameters in order to safely and effectively complete a surgical procedure.

Objective Assessment

At the end of each training task, Eyesi Surgical presents trainees with a detailed performance summary. Various parameters relating to instrument and microscope handling, surgical efficiency and tissue treatment are recorded by the training system. As a result, the educator is able to objectively assess the skills development of each trainee and control the learning pathway.

Courseware

Eyesi® Surgical provides a structured and ready-to-use training curriculum, which combines training of basic skills with training of actual surgical procedures in a consecutively structured course design. The courseware consists of courses with ascending levels of difficulty and allows residents to practice at an level appropriate for their current ability. To advance through a course, trainees must meet a required performance level on each task.
