Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope Simulator

Eyesi Indirect is an augmented reality simulator for training of binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. It includes a head-mounted stereo display on an ophthalmoscope headband, two diagnostic lenses, and a model patient head. The actual examination procedure resembles a real examination down to the last detail. When trainees put on the ophthalmoscope hat, they see a high-fidelity, three-dimensional virtual patient, and their own hand holding the virtual lens. All ophthalmoscope settings are always available on the user-friendly touch screen interface.

Wide Range of Patient Cases

Eyesi Indirect improves medical education by providing a broad and standardized clinical experience before students examine their first real patient. The Eyesi Indirect training system comes with more than 25 abstract cases for basic training, and more than 90 different patient cases, many of them based on real patients. All medical texts available on Eyesi Indirect – including patient histories, comments from doctors, multiple-choice questions, and diagnoses – have been reviewed by medical experts.

Individual Library of Medical Information

When a trainee detects an anatomical feature or a pathological sign during the examination, the finding is highlighted on the retina. At the same time, a findings tile with a brief description pops up on the touch screen. The trainee can tap the tile to view additional medical information. All detected tiles are stored in the trainee’s findings library. The findings library makes it possible to study and memorize findings after the examination, and to start cases related to a specific finding.

Objective, Competency-Based Assessment

Trainees receive immediate, objective feedback after each virtual eye exam, for example on light exposure, the area of the retina surface actually examined, or correct, wrong, and missing findings. Educators will be able to access the training data of their students through the secure VRmNet web portal.

Case-Based Learning with the Eyesi® Courseware

The Eyesi Indirect comes with an embedded curriculum of four tiers with several courses each was developed in cooperation with universities and eye specialists. Students advance through the curriculum independently by completing the cases within a course. Educators can lock or unlock courses as required.

Tier A Examination Skills

When learning how to use the indirect ophthalmoscope, trainees screen the retina to find abstract objects. They then document the location, shape, and size of these objects on a fundus chart. This helps them to learn how to interpret the inverted image correctly, and memorize findings.

Tier B Anatomical Structures

Tier B Anatomical Structures

Tier B offers a variety of healthy retinas from patients of different gender, age, and ethnicity. Trainees learn to identify anatomical features and classify characteristics of healthy retinas.

Tier C Basic Findings and Diagnoses

Tier C introduces common pathologies such as AMD or diabetes and represents the first step in learning how to diagnose pathological patterns. Students practice how to identify and classify signs of specific pathologies.

The clinical cases are modeled on real patient cases and help trainees to develop clinical skills such as making diagnoses and therapeutic decisions. Clinical cases may have complicated pathologies that need to be differentiated against multiple possible diagnoses.

Tier D of the simulator curriculum offers demanding cases with complex pathologies. This helps trainees to develop clinical skills such as making diagnoses and therapeutic decisions. All cases start with an introduction containing information on the patient and multiple-choice questions.

Viewing Additional Diagnostics

The training system provides medical background information to guide trainees in the process of evolving a diagnosis. The clinical cases present extensive information on the virtual patient, including results of diagnostic procedures such as OCT imaging, angiography, or perimetry.

Making a Diagnosis

After examining the patient and considering all available information, trainees specify their diagnoses and differential diagnoses.

Treatment Options and Evaluation

After finishing the examination, treatment options are discussed using multiple-choice questions and commentaries from experienced doctors. Finally, a detailed, objective evaluation of the performance is presented to the trainee.
