Eyesi Courseware features New Cataract Challenge Course
The newly implemented cataract challenge course will appear at regular time intervals while trainees practice on other courses of the Eyesi courseware. The challenge course requires trainees to perform well during one full surgery where they must successfully complete the capsulorhexis, hydro dissection, phaco divide & conquer, and irrigation & aspiration. There are no required scores, no second attempts at any task, and a continuously running clock, so that trainees are required to complete all steps of cataract surgery in a limited time window.
The cataract challenge course thus mimics well the conditions of live surgery as trainee cannot repeat a task if the attempt is poorly done and time continues to elapse even if the resident is not operating.
Educators can uses this 2nd tier of course to measure the skill progress of their residents between two attempts. Since the challenge course appears at fixed time intervals and should be completed before a residents can resume their other assigned simulation courses, it helps educators to validate that the accumulative and structured practice on the Eyesi simulator is resulting in a known level of skill for each key step in cataract surgery.
